I travel to many Blue Lodges and speak about the York Rite. I thought I would share my primary presentation here. You are free to use it, just remember to give credit.
You've stood in the Blue Lodge, experienced the beautiful symbolism, and learned the fundamental lessons of Freemasonry. But if you’re like most of us, you were left with a powerful feeling that the story isn't over.
What exactly happened after the death of our Grand Master, Hiram Abiff? What was the "lost word," and can it be recovered?
The York Rite doesn't just offer an answer—it offers a profound, logical, and deeply satisfying completion to the Masonic narrative you began as an Entered Apprentice.
Think of the three Blue Lodge degrees—Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason—as a three-act play. It’s captivating, but it ends on an agonizing cliffhanger. The York Rite is the rest of the production: it fills in the missing backstory, reveals the plot's true purpose, and brings the entire, grand narrative to a powerful, fully realized conclusion.
The York Rite is not a separate fraternity; it's the natural and necessary extension of your Master Mason degree. In fact, your York Rite journey began the moment you were raised! It is a quest for more light—a commitment to improving your Masonic knowledge and gaining a deeper understanding of the traditions you were introduced to.
The York Rite is commonly viewed through its three core bodies. Let's explore how each one builds upon your Blue Lodge knowledge.
The Chapter of Royal Arch Masons: The Discovery
This is the oldest and most widely practiced of the York Rite bodies, and it dives into the unfinished business of the Master Mason degree.
You remember the sense of loss—the tragic event and the missing secrets. The Royal Arch degrees explain it all. They dramatically recount the story of the rebuilding of King Solomon’s Temple and the discovery of something thought to be lost forever.
It is here, in the Holy Royal Arch degree, that the "lost word" is finally recovered. The significance isn't in the word itself, but in the journey of its recovery—the process, the perseverance, and the profound realization of its true meaning. This body resolves the Blue Lodge's dramatic tension, giving you a powerful sense of hope and completion.
The Council of Royal and Select Masters: The Secret Passageway
Often called Cryptic Masonry, this body acts as the "bridge" between the Blue Lodge and the Royal Arch, filling in the crucial events between the foundation and the recovery.
The degrees of the Council are rich with historical and symbolic context, answering the question: What happened before the events of the Royal Arch?
They tell the incredible story of the events immediately following Grand Master Hiram Abif’s murder and of the Secret Vaults beneath the Temple, and how the most valuable knowledge and treasures were preserved. These degrees focus on the importance of secrecy, loyalty, and the wise guarding of sacred knowledge. If the Blue Lodge is the foundation and the Royal Arch is the superstructure, the Cryptic Council is the secret passageway within the walls, revealing the hidden details of the Temple's construction and preservation that few ever learn.
The Commandery of Knights Templar: The Path of Chivalry
The final body in the York Rite, as relative to our discussion here, takes the journey in a distinctly chivalric and spiritual direction.
While Freemasonry is not a religion, the Commandery is unique: it is open only to Master Masons, who are also Royal Arch Masons, and Select Masters, who profess a belief in the Christian faith. The degrees here are not about ancient craft masonry, but a new quest—that of the Christian Crusades and the historical Order of the Knights Templar.
The symbolism shifts from the builder to the pilgrim and the soldier of Christ. The Commandery offers a path of moral and spiritual knighthood, focusing on the virtues of piety, sacrifice, and the protection of the innocent. It provides a powerful conclusion to the York Rite, urging the Mason to move from a philosophical understanding of truth to the practical application of faith and chivalry in his daily life.
In Summary: Your Story Continues
The York Rite is the full expression of the Masonic story. It answers your lingering questions, fills in the gaps, and provides the deeper, richer understanding of the symbolism you sought. It is the logical progression that takes you through the dramatic tragedy and initial enlightenment of the Blue Lodge, to the recovery and hope discovered in the Chapter Degrees at the rebuilding of the temple, and finally the recovery of the “lost word”. The journey continues through the Council Degrees, where you are exposed to hidden wisdom, culminating in a change of direction toward service to God and man as found in the Orders of the Commandery.
You began this journey as a Master Mason—don't stop at the cliffhanger. Are you ready to discover how the entire story of the Craft is truly rounded out?
